The electronic signs that we see up and down our motorways are undergoing a radical re-design to make them more energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions.
FMT have been commissioned to produce thousands of overmoulded plastic parts made from black and clear nylon to form a lens that fits over an LED point light source.
Produced using our unique overmoulding process the plastic parts will form a crucial part of the VMS (Variable Message System) display as the light guides transfer light from the LED to the display surface with greater efficiency. This means that the amount of power put into the LED can be less therefore reducing the overall power consumption of the displays.
Multiply this power saving over the huge amount of these displays found on our highways and the overall saving is enormous.
FMT have developed a unique overmoulding process that allows these lenses to be produced in one pass whereas traditionally they would have been manufactured in two stages. This obviously reduces the manufacturing costs and increases the accuracy of the plastic moulded component.
